Holly M. Chos...

Whether it was it was photography, drawing, painting, or sculpture, Holly has had her hands in it since she was a child. Born in Pennsylvania, her family encouraged her artistic interests. They let her sit in the mud and diligently try to sculpt realistic fruits and reptiles out of clay. Her mother helped her paint on t-shirts, and encouraged a number of different crafts. Her father let her use his Pentax 35mm SLR camera. Noticing her interest and eye in photography, she was given her first camera, Pentax 35mm SLR at the age of nine. That was her sole camera up to 2006, until it finally needed repairs. It was then that she started to shoot in digital. In 1999 she moved to New Orleans, and she fell in love with the Louisiana spirit and the city of New Orleans: “the city and those who give her breath stole my heart and left me inspired.”

With the help from her grandmother, she graduated from the University Of New Orleans with Bachelors in Art, with a concentration in photography.
She is currently working with the Vietnam Veterans of America Inc. Chapter 542 on a fund raising for the military and their families. Her “In this House..” flag painting will have prints and giclee’s done, which all proceeds will go to the organization to help all military members, both veterans and present, and their families. Her work has been purchased by collectors, professionals, and artist alike.

“I continue to work in other mediums, but photography has remained the closest to me. The canvas tells a tale as folklore, where the story is recreated to exaggerate the meaning. The photograph reveals something tangible, which at that moment, speaks, and tells me a story. I find that I am mostly drawn to those quiet moments that evoke something in the soul. The view is peaceful, but there is a hint of discomfort peaking over your shoulder. I hope that my photographs pass their stories onto others.”

"I love the way that the field was plowed around, what was a shell to what once was. It had been as if no one dared to take it down and make use of the land underneath. It was a memorial to what once was."

This is just a small part of the cemetery. Despite the appearance of this image, there were grave markers, where loved ones were desperately trying to save the names of their deceased from the growing vegetation by had painting their names on wooden crosses or boards and using them as head markers. The scene was disheartening, and yet it touched your soul to see the efforts within their means that family and friends were putting in to trying to save certain plots.

These two angles have been shot many times, but I consider myself very lucky to have been in the right spot at the right time. I spent only a moment taking a couple pictures of them, and as I was about to move on, the sky opened up almost to mimic their spread wings and as to welcome them into heaven itself.

This was a church in the 9th ward after Katrina. I really did not take many pictures of the devastation of Katrina, but this one really touched me. It was a simple church. The cross on the door was just pieces of wood nailed onto the door. What touched me was that part of that cross had fallen off. I don’t know if it was gone because of Katrina, or before, but either way I was touched by the fact that they had meticulously painted the missing piece back on the door. That action spoke to me of the purity of the congregation’s faith and willingness to be resilient, a quality that is not hard to find in the people of New Orleans.

This is a photograph that I have adored for many years now. I actually took it when I was just a kid, and was probably my first hint that I enjoyed to express those quite solitude moments that present a slight discomfort to the soul. I shot the photograph of the photograph, because I loved the authenticity of its age, and the fact that it was my young eye that tried to capture it. I wanted it as it was.

New Orleans cemeteries are well known for their beautiful bronze statues. I loved the way that the oxidation of this piece formed over her face, almost creating her own death mask.

Chalmette Battle Field: It seems hard to believe that this quite plot of land once was home to such bravery and bloodshed. It was if the oak tree was trying to pay its own respects by mimicking the shape if the still canons.

I have always enjoyed the southern idea of the front porch. It is more than the landing for the front door. It is the eyes and ears of the street, where neighbors welcome one another.
